Differential scanning calorimetry measures the heat absorbed or released by a sample, as compared with a reference material, while the sample is heated at a controlled rate. It is used to measure exothermic or endothermic processes such as phase transitions or reactions. The DSC trace of an unknown compound can be compared to that of known materials analyzed under the same conditions to help determine identity of the unknown.
